Anthony G. Vahey, Jr. passed peacefully at his Wellesley home December 1, 2024 with his family by his side. Born September 10, 1936, he was 88 years old. Born and raised in Watertown, Massachusetts, nicknamed "Sonny" as a child. A graduate of Watertown High, he was captain of both the hockey and golf teams. He also played football and basketball. He truly valued the many years spent caddying at Oakley Country Club in Watertown.
He was the son of the late Anthony G. Vahey and Katherine (Grant) Vahey. He met his wife Marsha (Schools) Vahey of Waltham, MA and married 6 months later. His true soulmate, they have been married for over 63 years.
Tony attended the University of Kentucky while in the Army and stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky. After returning home to Massachusetts, he worked for over 30 years as a salesman for Boston Beverage and then Capital Liquors. After retiring from the liquor industry, he worked part time on the greens crew for Pat Daly at Framingham CC. He also worked part time at Wellesley College. Wherever he worked, he always made great friends.
Tony was an avid golfer, growing up he played in many junior tournaments. He was a longtime volunteer rules official for Mass Golf. He was a true Boston Sports fan. He was fortunate to have Bruins season tickets from 1967-1975 and was one of the lucky spectators along with Marsha to see Bobby Orr fly through the air in 1970.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, known to them as Grampie. Chatham was a special place to him because of the endless summer memories made there with his family. He was affectionately named "the donut man" by one grandchild for the many times he would bring donuts to sporting events and family gatherings.
