Obituary

Brian John Houston age 82, of Newton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026.

Brian was born and raised in Newton, MA, by his parents, the late Russell Houston and his wife Madeline (Wilson).

Brian was many things to many people—a singer, an athlete, a landscaper, a caretaker, and a longtime employee of Stop & Shop—but above all, he was someone who cared deeply for others. He felt most at home outdoors, surrounded by the earth he loved so much. Fishing, playing cards, and settling into a good game of billiards were some of his simple joys.

Brian was a quiet man with the gentlest soul, always paying attention to the needs of those around him, often before his own. One of the ways he showed love best was through food. He was a great cook and took pride in making his "soul food" for family and friends, filling homes not just with good meals, but with warmth, comfort, and togetherness.

He is survived by his wife, Nadine Houston, and his children and their spouses: Raymie and Jamie Parker of Stoneham, MA; Jeffery and Sarah Lazaro of New Orleans; Kimberly Houston of Houston, TX; Jaya Ely of Topanga, CA; and Naomi O'Bannon and her partner Kristine Velez of Bristol, CT.

Brian also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Travis and Jeanine Houston of Garwood, NJ; Damon Ely and Lola Stockard of Topanga, CA; Vanessa and Teagan Parker of Stoneham, MA; Tiannee Houston and Nasya Bradshaw of Brockton, MA; and Liam, Logan, Lillian, Isabel, and Regan Lazaro of LA. He is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Kennedy Houston of Garwood, NJ, and his loving nieces and nephews: Glen Samuel, Clennie & Lee Gilliam, Lisa, Sydney, and Russ Houston.

Brian was predeceased by his twin brother, Alan, his brothers Bruce, William, and Russell Houston Jr., and his sister, Jane Gilliam (Houston).

Brian's Celebration of  Life will be held on Saturday February 14, 2026, at The Myrtle Baptist Church 21 Curve St West Newton, MA at 11:00 AM, with visitation prior to the service from 10:30-11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
