Obituary

David Michael Power of Newton passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on December 25, 2020. Born in Concord on May 15, 1987, David was a gentle soul who overcame severe disabilities to lead a full life and inspire many. Unable to see or speak, David won over the hearts of those who knew him with his trusting nature, his patience and determination, his love of those around him, and his sense of humor. His early experiences with inclusive education were portrayed in a popular children's book, Listen for the Bus. He later graduated from the Deafblind Program of the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown. There he was educated by and received the caring support of an extraordinary community of special education professionals. As a young adult he was an active volunteer in the Newton community with local businesses and his family parish, St. Ignatius of Loyola in Chestnut Hill. David's journey drew many young adults into the field of special education; he also inspired his father to become president of the Perkins School. His remarkable life would not have been possible without the creative and tireless efforts of his devoted mother, Helene Power. He is survived by his parents, Dave and Helene Power of Newton, and four siblings: Colin Power of Seattle, John Power of San Francisco, Cecily Power of Newton, and Patrice Power of Newton. A Memorial Mass at St. Ignatius and Burial at Newton Cemetery will be held privately. In David's honor, please consider a donation to the Perkins Infant-Toddler Program, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
