Dr. Stephen W. Louie

Dr. Stephen Wai-Ying Louie, MD, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, following a brief illness. He was a devoted physician, beloved family member, and friend whose life was marked by hard work, dedication, and caring for others.

Dr. Louie was born on April 29, 1941, in Hong Kong. He graduated from the prestigious La Salle College for secondary school in Hong Kong in 1959. Achieving his dream to enter the field of medicine, he graduated from the Medical School at the University of Hong Kong in 1966. He completed his medical internship and received his license to practice in Hong Kong, then immigrated to take medical exams again and completed an internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1969 in Toronto, Canada. He subsequently joined the University of Toronto to get specialty degrees in internal medicine and hematology. While in Toronto, he applied for and received a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and moved in 1976 to the New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts to conduct blood cell research and to serve as an internist at the South Cove Community Health Center. After the grant ended, he opened his own private practice in internal medicine in Boston’s Chinatown in 1982.

Patient care became Dr. Louie’s deepest commitment and proudest professional pursuit. In fact, he continued to see patients up until his passing. His patients included many people from the local Chinatown community as well as residents from all around Boston. Throughout his years treating patients, he was also a Tufts University School of Medicine Clinical Instructor, teaching rotating medical students.

Beyond medicine, Stephen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a cherished friend. He will be remembered for his intelligence, work ethic, kindness, and integrity. He took great joy in family gatherings and especially in spending time with his grandchildren. Passions in his younger years included tennis, skiing, running, fishing, and traveling. He loved to listen to classical music (including the musical performances of his children and grandchildren). He relished the challenge of reading French literature in the original French, and he spent considerable time meticulously translating Tang Dynasty-era poems to English. He took great satisfaction in tending to his homes and their surrounding grounds in West Newton, Massachusetts, and Moultonborough, New Hampshire.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Connie Louie (née Yeung) of West Newton, Massachusetts; his children, Josephine Louie and her husband Chiu-Shien Guo of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Jane Louie and her husband David Rogers of West Newton, Massachusetts; and Jeffrey Louie and his wife Elizabeth Barksdale of Providence, Rhode Island. He is also survived by four cherished grandchildren: Renee and Ryan Rogers, Jin Guo, and Kya Louie. Surviving siblings are Mary Louie of Winnipeg, Canada, and Joseph Louie of Toronto, Canada. He was predeceased by Gerald Louie of Perth, Australia.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 10 AM at Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St, West Newton, MA 02465., followed by a burial at Newton Cemetery in Newton Center, MA.
