Obituary

Edith Richmond Febiger, 74, passed away peacefully October 20, 2024, at Golden Pond Assisted Living in Hopkinton, while in hospice care. She was the daughter of the late Josefa Richmond Febiger and Christian Carson Febiger. She was born in Boston, the youngest of four siblings, and grew up at Pine Top Farm, her family's home in Essex, where she attended Shore Country Day School in Beverly. She was a graduate of Rosemary Hall School in Wallingford, Connecticut, and Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She participated in a summer semester abroad at The American School in Lugano, Switzerland.

Growing up, Edith spent many winter holidays in Franconia, New Hampshire, skiing at Cannon Mountain with her mother and siblings. In summer she enjoyed daily trips to Singing Beach at the home of her paternal grandparents, William S. and Lillian Wood Febiger, in Manchester by the Sea, and a long August family vacation at the home of her maternal grandparents, Ralph S. and Edith Waterman Richmond, in Little Compton, Rhode Island, where she swam and played tennis.

Edith had several early pursuits after college which often involved working with her hands and, preferably, outdoors. She worked variously at antiques restoration, greenhouse operations, caring for cattle, and waitressing. Her residency also varied, extending to nearby Ipswich, Cambridge and several more distant locales in New Hampshire and Maine.

Edith's main calling however was as an artist, painting with watercolors and oils, pencil sketching and making pottery. She was able to capture the impressionistic movement and energy of living things in her drawings and paintings. She exhibited her artwork, which included many landscapes from Essex, Little Compton and elsewhere at venues such as the Essex County Greenbelt Association in Essex and the Virginia Lynch Gallery in Tiverton Four Corners, Rhode Island. Meanwhile, she also worked for many years on her pottery designs at Cambridge Artists' Cooperative.

During these years, Edith's home had settled at the 'cottage', on the Essex homestead, where her parents still resided and where she helped work the grounds. At family holiday gatherings she delighted in sitting with her nieces at the 'kids table'. Later, family no longer in residence, Edith departed Essex to a large property she bought in Montville, Maine, where for several years, while her health still allowed, she continued with her art, walked in the fields and woods with her dog and a close neighbor, raised chickens, bought a tractor and oversaw the design and construction of a handsome barn.

She loved animals and kept many dogs and cats over the years. She particularly delighted in her English Springer Spaniel, Ticana. She enjoyed nature, taking long walks in the countryside wherever she lived. She also liked walking on Wingaersheek beach in Gloucester.

Edith is survived by her sister, Marian Febiger, of Somerset, and brothers, Christian, and his wife Maureen, of Wellesley, and, William, and his wife Ann of Essex. She is also survived by her nieces, Kathryn Presiado, and husband, Arnold, of Wellesley, and their children Julia, Leo and Charles; Julia Wanliss-Orlebar, and husband, Andrew, of Beacon, New York, and their children Donovan and Iona; Lydia Farmer, and husband, Sam, of Cockeysville, Maryland, and their sons, Cody and Desmond; and, Emily Pegues, and husband Peter, of Abington, Pennsylvania, and their children, William and Suzanne.

Edith was descended from Colonel Christian Febiger, an American Revolutionary War commander, confidant of George Washington and original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, who fought in many battles, including Bunker Hill. On her mother's side she could trace her lineage to passengers on the Mayflower.

Edith will be buried in Little Compton, Rhode Island, in the Richmond family plot. One of her ancestors, Edward Richmond, was an incorporator of Little Compton.
