Obituary

Elizabeth Roberto Steele, wife of the late Edward Harrison Steele Jr., mother to Bob Higgins-Steele and
his wife Betsy, Debra Gowins, Jane Steele and her husband Bill Sussman, grandmother to Courtney San
Martin and her husband Jason, MB Gowins and their wife, Jennie Brown, Ariel Higgins-Steele, Elise
Regan and her husband Joe, and great-grandmother to Cal and Tess Regan, Milo and Leonie Browins and
Marina San Martin.

Betty passed away peacefully on December 31 st at the age of 103, in her beloved home. In her very long
life she enjoyed friendships with diverse groups of people…her relatives in Boston, Stoneham and
Wakefield, colleagues from Wellesley College where she worked in the infirmary as a Medical Technician
for more than 25 years, neighbors from Newton Lower Falls, colleagues she met through her work in
private nursing, students at Wellesley College, friends from the Wellesley Senior Center, her aides later
in life: Flora, Maxime, Sabrina and Stella… the list is endless. She had many hobbies: gardening, cooking,
dancing, knitting, crocheting, macramé, handwriting analysis and astrology, the last two somewhat
short-lived!

She had an astonishing strength of character and a fearless approach to life. She also had a real sense of
fun and often laughed at the absurdity of situations. She had very strong opinions which she was not shy
about expressing, but she never held a grudge.

Her many acts of kindness are too great to list. She always put the needs of her family above her own.
She drove elderly people to appointments after she retired. She supported the Pine Street Inn and the
Home for Little Wanderers. She cared for her husband Ed for many years, volunteering at the Bedford
VA hospital in order to make sure that he was well taken care of.

She will remain forever in the hearts and minds of those who knew her.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St John the Evangelist Parish, 9 Glen Rd, Wellesley, MA at 11 am on
