In Loving Memory of Frances Scholz
With deep love and gratitude, we remember the life of Frances Scholz, 84, who passed away peacefully in June 2025.
Born in June 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri, Frances was the beloved daughter of Frances and Frank Scholz and the sister of Frank Scholz Jr. She was the devoted wife of Homer Franck and loving mother of three. Together with Homer, she loved, guided and supported Jonathan, Mary and Michael.
A scholar from an early age, she attended St. Teresa's Academy and the University of Kansas. She earned her PhD in German Literature at Stanford University. Frances traveled extensively throughout South America and Europe before serving as a professor of German Literature at Brandeis University.
A spiritual person, Frances practiced meditation daily and regularly engaged in philosophical discussions. She was a loving anchor to our family and broadened our world through the sharing of political, historical and spiritual discourse. Blessed with seven grandchildren, she delighted in the milestones of their lives and relished our family gatherings.
She is greatly missed by her loving husband of 49 years and her three children and their spouses, Jonathan Franck (Alysa) of New Hampshire, Mary Cleary (Peter) of Westhampton and Michael Franck (Rosa) of Boston. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Mira, Ezra, Logan, Ryan, Simon, Catherine and Anna. In addition, she leaves her brother Frank Scholz, sister-in-law Yolanda and niece Christina Scholz all of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
She will also be missed by her community—her Buddhist sangha, her Winona Street neighbors and a lifetime of friends.
A memorial service will be held in early September at the Burke Family Funeral Home in West Newton.
Donations in her name can be made to Women for Women International (www.womenforwomen.org).
