Gail Maurer Oliveira of Newton passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, with her husband Steve by her side, after a courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Her final weeks were spent surrounded by family, friends, and soothing music. She was 69. 

Gail grew up in Milton and Cohasset, graduating from Cohasset High School and later from Brown University, where she completed her undergraduate education in her late twenties and early thirties after helping launch a business. 

She shared a loving and wonderful life with her husband of 41 years, Steven Oliveira, after a chance meeting on Charles Street in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood in 1983, where they discovered a shared passion for long-distance running. That night, Steve told his roommate that he had met the woman he would marry. Less than two years later, after logging many miles together along the Charles River, Gail and Steve were married. From that day forward, Steve never doubted that he was the luckiest man alive. 

The couple first settled in Rhode Island and started a family, welcoming Drew and then Alex. A caring and loving mother, Gail was deeply devoted to and immensely proud of her sons. She was overjoyed to see them marry two wonderful women, Lilly and Elly, over the past two years. She cherished the many friends who visited Drew and Alex throughout the years and was especially grateful to have everyone gathered at home, sharing their love and support during her final days. 

Gail spent 40 years in commercial real estate on the South Shore and Cape Cod before retiring. As Steve's career took the family to Providence, Charlottesville, and Philadelphia before eventually returning to Boston, Gail managed the remarkable feat of raising a family while maintaining her business and regularly commuting back to Massachusetts. 

Gail was a talented artist, a championship high school softball player, an avid skier, an experienced sailor, a wonderful cook, a competitive runner, and a passionate tennis player. She loved sailing on Narragansett Bay, skating in Boston's Public Garden, running the trails along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, cherishing the pets that were such an important part of the family, walking the beach at sunrise and enjoying glorious sunsets at West Chop on Martha's Vineyard, playing grass-court tennis with her many friends at the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, and, most importantly, celebrating those friendships on the Longwood porch. 

Gail's greatest gift was friendship. Her deep and enduring relationships spanned from grade school classmates to friends she met in recent years. Friends will remember her warmth, graciousness, elegance, and timeless style, along with her remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, always finding the good in everyone. She was caring, generous, and constantly looking for ways to help others while rarely asking for anything herself. Her kindness, warmth, and quiet grace were a gift to all who were fortunate enough to know her. 

We are grateful to have shared in a life so full of love, friendship, and devotion to family. Though that life was cut far too short, we will celebrate Gail's legacy and carry her spirit, kindness, and warmth in our hearts forever. Steve's love for Gail never wavered, and no words better expressed what she meant to him, or the life they shared, than the lyric from Jimmy Webb's Wichita Lineman: "I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time." 

Gail is survived by her husband, Steven Oliveira; her son, Andrew Oliveira, and his wife, Lilly Beck; her son, Alexander Oliveira, and his wife, Elly Hull; her sister, Maryellen Maurer, and her husband, Wilson Tom; her brother, Louis Maurer, and his wife, Melinda; her brother, Paul Maurer; her mother-in-law, Carol Vogel; her sisters-in-law, Lauren Vogel and Janice Vogel; her brother-in-law, David Vogel; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Theresa Maurer, and her brother, John Maurer. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street, West Newton, MA 02465. A Funeral Service celebrating Gail's life will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Redeemer, 379 Hammond Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467. Interment will follow at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut Street, Newton Centre, MA 02459.
