Obituary

Herbert Earl Lupien of Newton Upper Falls, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 12th, 2024, at Mass General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Several days before his death he told his family, I think I've lived a good life, this provides comfort to his family.

As a lifelong resident of Newton, he was the owner and operator of his family business, Lupien Tree & Landscape, formerly known as W. E. Lupien and Sons, established in 1919 by his father. It remains a well-known Newton entity serving Newton and surrounding communities.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Arborist Association (MAA), an association his father helped establish in the 1930's. He took pride in every aspect of the business operations. As a self-taught small machine repair technician, mechanic and metal fabricator he was able to make repairs to most of the small equipment, large equipment and fleet of trucks to keep the business up and running. If it was broken, he could fix it! He would often spend long hours in his "barn" so that crews could roll out the morning.

In addition to his lifelong passion in the family business, he was an avid gardener with a massive garden every year always sharing the bounty of his garden, especially his extensive variety of exotic hot peppers and the best tasting tomatoes around, with all he knew. In the late 60's and early 70's, he enjoyed riding his hotrod and many motorcycles that he owned over the years. In the mid 70's he and his daughter Laura became certified beekeepers and kept bees for many years producing gallons of honey each year. As a lifelong photographer he always had his camera with him out and ready to capture the smiles of his family and friends and whatever life presented to him. Stamp collecting was a hobby that he had since a young boy and carried it into adulthood and would regularly visit the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History. From 1992 to 1999 he was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, leading his two sons and many other youths in his church's Boy Scout program. He was a man of great faith who loved his Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served faithfully in many capacities over the years and developed many lifelong friendships with its members.

Despite his accomplishments in his business, his many hobbies and his talents, his greatest accomplishment was his family, who he was very proud of. He was the devoted husband and best friend to Maureen (O'Hara) Lupien for 60 years. Their love story began 63 years ago and endured through the years while raising four children. He was the cherished father of Laura Oakes (Tony), Lynn Wasilewski (Marty), Paul Lupien (Mary), and Jason Lupien (Ashley). He was predeceased by his parents Waldo E. and Dorothy (Curran), his brothers Ralph W. and Russell P. The proud grandfather to ten grandchildren Shondra Goldkuhl (Alex), Jeremy Goldkuhl (Christine), Leila Masterson (Robert), Ash and Rachel Wasilewski, Jared, Kaylee and Elliana Lupien, Jon and Josh (Hayes) and great-grandfather to ten great-grandchildren (Cristian, Isbella, Jacob and Lilianna Parejo, Sofia and Mila Medina, Felix, Millie and Monti Masterson and Sylvie Goldkuhl).

Herb's dedication to his family and his business was evident in all aspects of his life. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched with his kindness, giving spirit, hard work, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
