John P. Hurney died on September 8, 2025. He was 94. Born in Boston on December 29, 1930 he was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Marie-Jeanne (Bernier) Hurney.
He is survived by his son, Paul and his wife, Loretta; daughter, Elizabeth; and grandson, Nicholas, all of Newton, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by Beverly, the love of his life - and wife of 65 years; and his siblings Joseph Hurney and Margaret McDougle.
John grew up in Dorchester and proudly displayed his OFD (Originally From Dorchester) decal on his car! He attended Northeastern University where he met Beverly on a blind date. After marrying in 1958, they settled in Newton.
He, his family, and friends also spent many wonderful summers on the shores of Lake Memphremagog in Quebec, in a summer cottage he built himself, using his engineering and woodworking skills
For over 30 years he graciously assisted Beverly in her role as Cemetery Superintendent at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, updating and maintaining deeds, and maps. As her 'assistant' he helped coordinate burials, assuring that everyone was where they belonged.
He was a longtime member of the Newton Rotary Club, serving as photographer and newsletter editor for many years. In 2004/2005 he was named "Rotarian-of-the-Year". From 1975 to 2007 he was an active member of the Troop Committee for Scout Troop 182 in Wellesley.
His Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Road, Wellesley Hills on Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 am. Visitation on Friday, September 12 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 56 Washington Street, Wellesley. Burial will be private.
