Obituary

Julianne McConville (Ryan) "Julie" of Hingham, formerly a resident of Wellesley for 45 years, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family, on July 3, 2024 at the age of 88.

Julie is survived by Frank, her loving husband of 62 years, five children, twelve grandchildren and a great grandchild -– Michael McConville and wife Kerry, of Madison, CT, with children Michael (Quinn), Ryan (Caroline) and son Rory; Emmett (fiancé Elise) and Jack; Julie McConville and husband Daxing Zhang of Los Angeles, CA, with children Shane and Charlotte; Susan Zankel and husband Mark of Hopkinton, NH, with children Maura and Andrew; Katherine McGaugh and husband Jim of Needham, MA, with children Quinlan and Aidan; and Elizabeth Kim and husband Johnny of Denver, CO, with children Bridget and Shamus. Julie is also survived by her sisters: Mary Pat Ryan RSCJ, a sister of the Sacred Heart; Sara Murphy; Susan Ryan; and Marjorie and husband Tom Holzfeind; and beloved nephews and nieces. Julie is predeceased by her parents, Richard and Mary, and brother, Richard, who died in infancy.

Born in 1935 in Davenport, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Caffrey) Ryan and the third born of six children. Julie grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and she and her sisters spent memorable summers visiting relatives on the farms in Underwood, Iowa. Always a leader, she served as President of her class, graduating from Immaculate Conception Academy, Davenport, Iowa in 1953. She graduated from the College of Duchesne, Omaha, NE, in 1957, where she was active in theater, and President of Children of Mary.

As her devoted husband Frank loves to recount, one enchanted evening in 1960 Omaha, Nebraska, Frank and Julie's eyes met across a crowded dance floor. Then forever his beloved "Blue Eyes," they married in June 1962 and were joined in mind, heart, body and soul for ever more.

Together with a growing family they lived in North Arlington, New Jersey; St. Louis, Missouri; Kansas City, Missouri; and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, before moving to Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1972 with children ages 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, where they raised their family in a cherished home and neighborhood for 45 years.

Julie's early career was teaching, including High School English (Nebraska, New Jersey), and Montessori (Missouri). She was involved in the faith community, preparing workshops as a Leadership Trainer of Christian Family Movement, and Founder of Marriage Encounter enrichment programs in her communities in Kansas City and Philadelphia.

With her strong connection and commitment to St. John the Evangelist Parish in Wellesley, Julie taught Sunday school and started the High School Religious Education Program. Julie shared her energy and leadership with families in her community, serving as President of Newcomers and Postcomers; leading Girl Scouts; teaching Art Education in the elementary schools and volunteering with the Wellesley chapter of American Field Service.

After earning her masters degree in Theology and Pastoral Ministry from Boston College, Julie served as the Religious Education Coordinator at St. John's the Evangelist Church in Wellesley for 13 years.

Julie and Frank's faith guided all aspects of their lives and inspired many around them. With its beginnings in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Church in Wellesley, Julie was among the founding members of Voice of the Faithful, Catholic laity organized to provide a prayerful voice, attentive to the Spirit, through which the faithful can actively participate in the governance and guidance of the Catholic Church, and for which Julie served as National Secretary.

In 2017, Julie and Frank found a vibrant and engaging new community of friends at Linden Ponds Retirement Community in Hingham, Massachusetts, where Julie served as Co-Chair of the Catholic Community, was active in the musical theater, and served as a Eucharistic Minister for the sick.

Central to all Julie did was family. She centered her life on lovingly raising her five children, delighting in her 12 grandchildren and great-grandson; deepening her beautiful marriage with Frank, and staying connected with her 4 adored sisters. Her energy, thoughtful planning and excitement for joyfully gathering to celebrate a
sacrament, a holiday, a graduation, a musical performance, a sports game (and there were many!) or even a zoom call – was contagious. Julie was the force that created and honored family traditions, big and small, and made sure that family stayed connected – gifts that keep on giving as her family continues to grow, even after she has gone.

Julie's compassion for others, warm sense of humor and infectious kindness was reciprocated at Rose Court and Hospice Care at Linden Ponds in Hingham over the past 8 months. Her family expresses the deepest gratitude to all those who provided their personal support and gentle, professional and compassionate care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 10th at 11AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, Wellesley, followed by burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4-7PM in the Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, Wellesley. In lieu of flowers, donations in Julie's memory may be made to Voice of the Faithful (www.votf.org).
