Obituary

Jutta Bielefeldt Hicks of Boston passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023 with her son and daughter at her side. She will be dearly missed by her brother Christian Bielefeldt, daughter Darlington (Toni) Peters Hicks, son Christian Bielefeldt Hicks, and four grandchildren.

Jutta will be remembered for her generosity and warmth, fierce loyalty, love of gardening, resilient optimism, and quirky sense of humor, which she often expressed through off-beat greeting cards.

Jutta was born on March 24, 1944 in Ribnitz, Germany. She grew up in Hannover, Germany, where she completed her studies in 1967. She began her career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Noeppke, Germany and later became a German language instructor for American diplomats at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington, DC. Jutta married Coleman and moved to the U.S. in 1968. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1976 but regularly returned to Germany with her children to visit family and friends there.

A resident of Boston since 1995, Jutta was engaged in numerous civic and community activities, including the Beacon Hill Garden Club, fundraising for the Democratic Party, volunteering for Christmas in the City, and volunteer gardening at the Tobin School and On the Rise, Inc., where she was a founding donor for a memorial garden.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to On the Rise, Inc. (www.ontherise.org)
