On December 12, 2024, Kathleen Patricia (Costello) Sarkarati, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully. Kathy was known for her selflessness, compassion, and unwavering faith. With a generous heart, she made it her life's mission to care for others. This dedication was evident in her roles as a mother of five, a nurse, a school volunteer, a daycare provider, a florist, and a devoted grandmother.
Kathleen was born on September 29, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, to James and Margaret Gertrude Costello. After the untimely deaths of her parents, she was lovingly raised by her aunt, Frances Loretta "Peco" (O'Ferrall) Costello. Kathy had eight siblings: Jim, Charie, Peg, Tim, Stephen, Joan, Karen, and Deb. She was a proud graduate of Mount De Sales Academy and the nursing school at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Kathy met Dr. Mehdi Sarkarati, then a resident at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and they married. Together, they raised five children: Ali, Shahin, Hamid, Reza, and Mariam. The family later relocated from Maryland to Massachusetts, where Kathy spent the remainder of her life.
Kathy took the lead in raising her children. For several years, worked as a nurse at a local nursing home and she also ran a daycare from her home. Her love of gardening and floral design led her to work as a florist, creating beautiful bouquets that brightened many lives. She also supported her elderly neighbors and volunteered at her children's schools. One of her proudest achievements was teaching the "Understanding Handicaps" program, which helped students appreciate individuals with different abilities. A teacher once described Kathy as a "saint" for her years of service to the school and the community.
As her children grew and began their own families, Kathy embraced the role of grandmother with open arms. Known affectionately as "Meme," she was deeply involved in the lives of her ten grandchildren. She loved spending time with them, taking them on adventures, and shopping for them.
Despite health challenges and the loss of her beloved husband, Kathy's big smile and expressive eyes continued to light up any room. She remained an inspiration to all who knew her.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, James Costello, Margaret Gertrude Costello, and Frances Loretta "Peco" (O'Ferrall) Costello, her husband Mehdi Sarkarati, her brothers James and Stephen Costello, and her sister Mary Charlotte "Charie" (Costello) Scranton.
She is survived by her five children and ten grandchildren: Ali Sarkarati, his wife Deepti, and their children Josh and Piya; Shahin Smith, her husband Gregory, and their daughter Megan; Hamid Sarkarati, his wife Sylvia, and children Alexandra, Diego, and Isabella; Reza Sarkarati, his wife Kristen, and their children Zakary and Kira; and Mariam Hurley, her husband Ryan, and their children Connor and Logan and her remaining siblings, Margaret Costello, John Timothy Costello and his wife, Julie, Joan Costello, Karen Smith and her husband, Blake, and Deborah Bourke and her husband, James and sisters-in-law Barbara Phelps Costello and Deborah Kirby Costello and nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The family invites her family and friends to a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Corpus Christi - St. Bernard Parish, 1523 Washington Street, West Newton, MA.
