Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Huang, a visionary entrepreneur, beloved community member, and pioneer in the culinary arts. We are heartbroken to share that we lost our leader and inspiration, Jack, yesterday. Jack was not only the owner of several of Boston's most celebrated restaurants—Douzo, Basho, Shabumaru, Sushi Momento, and Kome Sushi at Harvard's Smith Campus Center—but also a mentor, innovator, and friend to countless people.

From the moment Douzo opened its doors in the Back Bay, Jack redefined what it meant to enjoy Japanese cuisine in Boston. His passion for blending East and West through innovative flavor pairings and his commitment to excellence made Douzo and Basho iconic dining destinations. Jack was also the first to bring sushi into the heart of Fenway Park, an accomplishment that highlighted his ability to think beyond the ordinary and bring people together through food.

Jack's vision extended beyond traditional restaurant spaces. With Sushi Momento and Shabumaru, he introduced diners to unique and refined experiences, while Kome Sushi became a cherished addition to Harvard's Smith Campus Center, reflecting his ability to adapt and innovate in new environments.

As anyone who knew Jack knows, nothing meant more to him than ensuring that the restaurants he established continued with the excellence he insisted upon. We are committed to honoring Jack's wishes by maintaining the tradition of excellence he inspired in everything we do.

Jack's dedication extended far beyond the kitchen. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, his steadfast support of his employees and the community reflected his unwavering compassion and leadership. His generosity, humility, and determination left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.

Jack's legacy is one of creativity, resilience, and an enduring love for sharing his culture with the world. He leaves behind a thriving culinary empire and a profound impact on Boston's dining scene. His vision and warmth will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jack's family, friends, and the entire community during this difficult time. Let us honor his memory by celebrating the passion, dedication, and kindness he embodied every day.
