Ms. Chen Liyi was born on April 14, 1949, in Shanghai, into a family of high-level intellectuals. From a young age, she was studious, ambitious, lively, and intelligent, with a deep passion for music and the arts. She was selected as a member of the Shanghai Children’s Palace recitation and dance troupes, frequently representing the youth of Shanghai by presenting flowers and greetings to foreign dignitaries at the airport. In 1966, during her middle school years, she proactively volunteered to head to Xinjiang, dedicating 15 years of her youth to the development of the frontier region. Liyi and I met, fell in love, and built our life together in Xinjiang; for 60 years, our original commitment to one another never wavered. In 1981, we returned to our hometown in the Southeast as talent recruited by the city of Hangzhou. Liyi threw herself into the field of education with boundless enthusiasm, and through self-study, she earned a college degree while working. Her paper, "Music Starts with Listening," was awarded an Outstanding Thesis Award by the Ministry of Education. For over thirty years, she was a dedicated educator, unwavering in her commitment, and she mentored countless students until her retirement in 2004. After moving to the United States following her retirement, Liyi remained passionate about community arts. She wholeheartedly participated in music and singing activities at local Chinese schools and senior centers in the Boston area, where she was beloved and highly regarded for her program rehearsals and piano accompaniment. Liyi unfortunately passed away due to illness in the early morning of June 21, 2026, at 5:30 AM, at the age of 78.
