Obituary

Lorraine Lyman of Cambridge, Massachusetts, November 29, 2023.

Born August 14, 1928 in Boston. Daughter of George H. Lyman and Eleanor Lee Lyman, and sister of Anne Lyman Powers and the late Eleanor Lee (Lyman) Dober. Beloved aunt to Patrick Dober, Claire Brake Danaher, Harry Powers, George Powers, Katherine Powers and Eleanor Powers.

Lorraine was raised in Brookline and lived throughout her adult life in Cambridge. She attended the Winsor School, Smith College, where she majored in English Literature and French, and Boston University where she graduated with a Master's in Education. Her professional life included working at Little Brown as well as the Mass General Hospital Alcohol Clinic, where she worked on a research project with The National Institute of Mental Health. She also worked as a freelance copy editor and edited seminal works in college campus planning.

A lover of music and a talented violin and French horn player, Lorraine was devoted to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She was regarded by those in a close circle as a talented poet. Her progressive values and deep compassion for others was reflected in her support of cultural institutions as well as nonprofits in human rights, mental health and disaster relief. She will be remembered for her deep empathy, loving engagement with those around her, and sense of humor.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of her life at the home of Patrick Dober, Friday January 5th at Noon, at 82 Oxford Road, Newton Mass, followed by a reception.
