In Loving Memory of Mahn Youn Jo
1939 – 2025

With deep love and gratitude, we remember the life of Mahn Youn Jo, who passed away peacefully in 2025.

Born in 1939 in Choong Nahm Suh Cheon, South Korea, he was the beloved second son of Nahm Cheon Jo and Chul Soon Yoo. From an early age, he embodied humility, perseverance, and a quiet wisdom that touched many lives.

After graduating from Seoul National University in 1964 with a degree in Economics, he began his career at the Korea Development Bank. In 1967, he earned his MBA from Korea University and married Oak Dong Kim, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership of love, faith, and mutual respect.

In 1976, Mr. Jo immigrated to the United States with his family, seeking new beginnings. He worked at Samsung America and later established his own accounting firm in 1985, which he operated with integrity and dedication until retiring in 2022.

A man of deep faith, he was ordained as an elder at LA Sungil Presbyterian Church in 1996. He earned a degree from New Covenant Theological Seminary in 1998 and served the Korean American Christian community for decades. His leadership extended to roles in the LA Christian Ethics Movement and the Korean Language Promotion Foundation.

Writing was a true passion throughout his life. He was a founding member and president of the Korean American Essayists' Association, editor of Literary World, and a regular columnist for both the Korea Times and Korea Daily. His thoughtful essays earned him multiple awards, including the Overseas Korean Literary Award and the Korean American Essay Prize. His published essay collections—Bird Droppings (2003) and Marriage (co-authored with his wife 2008)—are lasting reflections of his insight and heart.

Above all, Mr. Jo will be remembered for his deep devotion to his family, unwavering faith, gentle character, and steady presence. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Oak Dong Jo; his daughters Eunice S. Feller (Stephen R. Feller) and Lesli S. Jo (Cornelius Collins); and his grandson Dominic Wonil Feller, who brought great joy to his later years. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Steven S. Jo, in 2023.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2025, 10:30AM at Korean Church of Boston, 32 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA 02445. Interment will be private.

The family kindly requests prayers and warm remembrance. Condolences may be sent to: mahnyjomemorial@gmail.com
