Margaret "Peggy" Hannigan passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on April 14th, 2025 at the age of 83. Peggy was born on July 2nd, 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up on a quaint street in the neighborhood of Roslindale. She attended Saint Clare High School and was regarded as a gifted student by her instructors.
At a local dance hall, she met and fell in love with Cpl. John E. Hannigan, a Korean War Marine Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. They married in 1965 and embarked on a beautiful honeymoon in Puerto Rico. Peggy and John welcomed three children shortly after. The couple purchased their family home in Easton, Massachusetts, where Peggy would spend most of her life. In 1972, Peggy suffered the unexpected loss of her husband while their children were still young; she is remembered for her strength and perseverance following his passing.
Peggy furthered her education at the New England School of Art and Design and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. In her free time, Peggy loved to cook, garden, and spend time with her girlfriends. Peggy was outgoing, thoughtful, and lovable. She always opened her home to family and friends for celebrations and holidays. Peggy is also remembered for her deep compassion towards animals, taking in many strays throughout her life.
In the late 1990s, Peggy met her long-term partner Clement "Clem" O'Brien, whom she spent twenty-five loving years with. Peggy worked for the Town of Easton towards the end of her career. During her retirement, she and Clem enjoyed spending time in Naples, Florida.
Loved ones will always remember Peggy's crystal blue eyes and beautiful smile that brightened every room she entered.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Hazel and John J. O'Brien Sr.; brother, John J. O'Brien Jr.; husband, John E. Hannigan; and partner, Clement O'Brien. Peggy is survived by her sons, Mark and Bill; daughter, Eileen, and her husband, Bob; and her grandchildren, Claire, Kylee, and Brody. She is also survived by her first cousin and lifelong friend, Father Joe Owens, S.J.
A graveside service will be held at Holyhood Cemetery in Chestnut Hill on April 18th at 11 AM.
