Obituary

Mary-Ann Greene, age 90 of Newton, MA died on April 10th at the Adelaide Memory Care Centre in
Newton. Born to Joseph and Nora Greene on July 17th, 1934 at the Saint Elizabeth's Hospital of Boston,
she grew up in the Newton area with her three siblings: Eddie, Helen and Peggy. Mary-Ann was married
twice and is survived by her son, Madoc.

Mary-Ann was a long time employee of the Newton School system and worked as the school secretary
at Burr and then Bowen Elementary schools. During those years she also earned her Master's degree in
counseling at Suffolk University.

With her life friend, Elisa, the two had many an adventure. Among which was their touring Europe on
their own in the late 1950s. Mary-Ann continued her interest in travel with her first husband, James
Pope, on an extended time in Europe that saw them living in Paris for many months. Among other
subsequent travels was her birding adventure to a tribe living off of the Panama Canal.

Mary-Ann was an active member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton. She frequently
volunteered her time there and was well known among the congregation. Mary-Ann was also deeply
involved in the Second Step Woman's Shelter becoming the conduit for getting clothing and items
donated to the women and families there. Mary-Ann continued to be the "go to woman" for handling
donations both to Second Step and other charitable groups in the years afterward.

Upon her retirement, Mary-Ann applied herself to her charitable work and to her house in Newton
Lower-Falls. It was her passion project and reflected her aesthetics in every aspect from its layout, the
art on its walls, to her backyard garden and landscaping. In later years, Mary-Ann also took up painting
herself and found no small joy in that new creative source.

The service for Mary-Ann will be held Saturday, May 10th at the FUUSN Sanctuary at 1326 Washington Street in Newton at the corner of Washington and Highland streets. Her celebration of life service commences at 1PM and will be followed by a reception in the parish hall.
