Mary Jane (Libby) Jewett, formerly of Newton, Marlborough, and Orleans, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 93.

Mary Jane was the beloved wife of the late James R. Jewett and the devoted mother of five sons, Mark of NH, Greg and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hudson, Cliff of Newton, John and his wife, Carey, of Natick, and Jay and his wife, Hallie, of Florida. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Jason, Jimmy, Kelsey, Melissa, Kayla, Cliffy, Jake, Brett, Ryan, Kirsten, Mackenzie, Tyler and a cherished great-grandmother to Kristy, Quinn, Briella, Aiden and CJ.

Family was at the center of Mary Jane’s life. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved the time they spent together. She created a lifetime of memories through the traditions, holidays, gatherings, and simple moments that brought everyone closer. Her love for her family was unwavering, and the memories she gave them will remain with them always. Mary Jane grew up in Newton and attended Newton schools before going on to secretarial school. Throughout her working years, she was employed at Boston College Law School and later at Mason Rice Elementary School. She approached her work with warmth and dedication and valued the people and relationships that became part of her life along the way. After retiring, Mary Jane and James moved to Orleans on Cape Cod, a place that had been especially meaningful to her since she was a toddler. Cape Cod was where she felt at home, and she cherished the years she spent there. When building their new home in Orleans, Mary Jane made sure there was one very special feature, a room she proudly called the “Christmas Tree Room.” She wanted a ceiling high enough to hold the most impressive Christmas tree possible. Christmas was, without question, Mary Jane’s favorite time of year. She loved the excitement, the traditions, the decorations, and most of all, having her family together. The Christmas Tree Room became more than a room, it became part of the family's memories and a reflection of the joy Mary Jane found in bringing everyone together. She also treasured the simple pleasures of Cape Cod, memories made at Skaket Beach, enjoying her favorite coffee ice cream, and spending time surrounded by the people and places she loved. Mary Jane never lost touch with the people who had been part of her life for so many years. She always made time to get together with her high school friends, often meeting at the Wayside Inn, where they could laugh, reminisce, and pick up right where they had left off. Those lifelong friendships were a beautiful testament to the kind of person she was, someone who valued people and held on to the connections that mattered. Mary Jane will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind not only the people who loved her, but also a lifetime of traditions, stories, laughter, and memories that will continue to be shared for years to come. Her Christmas spirit, her love of Cape Cod, and most of all, her deep love for her family will remain a lasting part of her legacy.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street (Route 16), West Newton, Massachusetts.
