Obituary

Odell (Ingram) Haywood was the third of four daughters of the late Augustus and Mary Ella (Diggs) Ingram. She was born in Maxton, North Carolina on September 22, 1934. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters and grandson on January 4, 2022.

Odell moved from her parent's home in Brooklyn, New York to Newton, Massachusetts at the age of 13 to live with her eldest sister and brother in-law Ruth and James Turner. She attended Newton Public Schools and graduated from Newton High School. Odell met Walter Haywood in Junior High School and they were later married and blessed with three children, Kenneth, Joy and Deneen. They settled in Newtonville, Massachusetts.

While raising her three children Odell worked full-time as a domestic worker for a number of families in the surrounding Newton area. In 1996, Odell began a 10-year career at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts as the household caretaker for the Head of School. Following her retirement from Dana Hall, Odell decided to work part-time in order to spend
more time with her grandchildren.

Odell enjoyed cruise travel with family and friends and made over 75 voyages. In 2009, Odell flew to South Africa with her daughter Deneen and granddaughter, Amanda as the guest of Oprah Winfrey to visit Joy who was working at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg.

Odell is survived by Walter Haywood of Sunrise, Florida, daughters Joy Moore of Medfield, Deneen Haywood of Orlando, Florida. Grandchildren Christopher Moore of San Francisco, California, Nicholas Pacheco (Elizabeth) of Newton, Amanda Moore of Cambridge, and Noah Decaille of Century City, California and great-grandson Quintin Pacheco of Newton. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Katy Haywood and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Odell is predeceased by her son Kenneth, her son-in-law Robert Moore, her sisters, Ruth Turner and James, Lily Black and Calvin and Sarah Ingram, and her brothers-in-law
Alfred Haywood, Arthur Haywood and Howard Haywood.

A wake will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street, West Newton, MA 02465. The funeral service will be on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., at Trinity Chapel Boston College, Newton Campus, 885 Centre Street, Newton Centre, MA 02459
