Richard Francis "Dick" McCarthy, age 83, of Wellesley, MA passed away on May 13, 2024 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Charles A. and Mary M. McCarthy and the beloved husband of the late Edwina (Lynch) McCarthy.
Dick was born in Cambridge, MA on February 28, 1941. He was a graduate of Newton High School, Harvard College and Boston University School of Law, where he served as editor of the Law Review. He practiced law at Bingham, Dana and Gould before becoming a partner at his own firm, Willcox, Pirozzolo and McCarthy. In addition to his work as an attorney, Dick served as a member of both the Wellesley Town Meeting and its advisory board.
Besides his family, Dick was most proud of his service in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned in 1962, and, after completing rigorous training, he joined UDT 21, a predecessor to today's Navy SEALS. He remained friends with many of his teammates for years and enjoyed attending their annual reunions. Indeed, they were "BUD/S for life."
Dick was a lifelong golfer who caddied at the Woodland Golf Club as a young man and who won a scholarship from the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, a philanthropy he supported until his death. In the good weather, Dick could almost always be found on the course at Brae Burn Country Club where he made more friends.
In his final years, Dick especially enjoyed reconnecting with his classmates from the Newton High class of 1958. He was the treasurer for their 65th reunion held last spring, and, despite his failing health, he spent many nights balancing the books and straightening out the guest list. The family is grateful to the numerous classmates who have reached out at this time.
In addition to his wife and parents, Dick was predeceased by his son, Ted, and his brother, Charles. Survivors include his children, Sheila, Jennifer (Joon Ho Lee) and Richard, Jr. as well as his grandchildren, Niambh and Maisie Lee. He is also survived by his brother, Robert, and his wife, Dianne; his sister, Mary Jane; and his sister, Patricia and her husband, George Brown. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
As has been the case for many Americans, the last four years were trying for Dick. Besides his wife and son, he lost several close friends. The family appreciates the kindness shown Dick in his final months by his friends of more than sixty years, Carmen Gentile, John Kehoe and Ann and Mike Tomsho. Finally the family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Bayada Home Health, Newton Wellesley Hospital, Wellesley Dialysis, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Hebrew Senior Living, and Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18, at the Henry Burke Funeral Home in Wellesley at 9 a.m. with a funeral mass to follow at St. John the Evangelist Church in Wellesley at 10 a.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Needham.
