Dear sister of Carolyn Burke of Newton and the late Marguerite Burke, Thomas Burke, Gertrude Burke, Robert Burke, Virginia Welch, Dorothy Jordan, Esther Codyer and Donald Burke.
Rita was born in 1926, as the second of ten children. She entered into a home filled with love from a mother who had immigrated from Ireland as a teen and a father who worked as a Lieutenant for the City of Newton Fire Department. Losing her father at a young age, Rita assumed many of the responsibilities with the younger children. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newton Centre and then started a career working at John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston. Rita married Edward Aucoin in 1949, a Massachusetts State Police Staff Sergeant and decorated World War II veteran. A lifelong resident of Newton, she raised her four loving children and then returned to the workforce for many years as an executive assistant at Liberty Mutual.
Rita was fortunate to be able to travel the world with her husband as her children began to build their own families. She most enjoyed the many summers she spent traveling in her ancestral homeland of Ireland, as well as other parts of Europe. One of her most cherished memories was being able to visit her mother's homestead in Arigna, County Roscommon.
Back home, Rita's proudest accomplishment was ensuring that her four children received an excellent education, including all four graduating from Boston College. She was overjoyed to participate in the raising of her growing family of grandchildren.
Rita leaves us as the beloved matriarch to four children, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren and growing.
