Robert Chagnon
Sr
July 23, 1949 – December 31, 2025
Robert "Bob" Chagnon, Sr. of West Newton, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was the beloved son of the late John J. Chagnon, Sr. and Clare M. (Reilly) Chagnon, and the devoted husband of Diana M. (Bird) Chagnon, with whom he shared 56 loving years of marriage.
Bob was a proud and loving father to Robert Chagnon, Jr. (Tina Kiely) of Waltham, Brian M. Chagnon (Christine) of Hudson, and Karen M. Chagnon of Framingham. He was a cherished grandfather to Justina Cucchi-Chagnon, Leah Chagnon, Ryen Chagnon, Jake Chagnon, Lauren Chagnon and Robert Dagostino, and great-grandfather to Shawn Taylor and Layla Cucchi.
Bob was the dear brother of John J. Chagnon, Jr. (Diane) of West Bridgewater, Jean Terrasi (Tony) of Natick, the late Paul Chagnon (Anne) of Medway, Carol Paupst (Steve) of Mississippi, Mary Ellen Castro (Mike) and Gail Moylan (John) both of West Newton. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
Bob was born and raised in West Newton and spent countless summers in Marshfield. He graduated Newton High School in 1967. He met the love of his life Diana at Quinn News Service in West Newton in 1965. They were married in 1969 and also settled in West Newton where they raised their three children.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Bob proudly served the City of Newton Fire Department for 40 years, from 1974 until his retirement in 2014. His dedication to public service and deep pride in the firefighting profession defined much of his life.
In addition to his career as a firefighter, Bob was a skilled carpenter who found great satisfaction working with his hands. He took special pride in building and maintaining his own vacation log cabin in New Hampshire and in doing extensive work on the Chagnon family's beloved cottage in Marshfield—places where countless family memories were made.
Bob will be remembered for his strong work ethic, loyalty to family, and quiet generosity. He leaves behind a legacy of service, craftsmanship, and love that will be carried on by all who knew him.
