Robert J. Murphy passed away peacefully at his home in Dover, New Hampshire at age 89. Bob was born in Boston, and spent his formative years in Lowell, MA. After graduating from Boston College, he went on to serve his country as a Navy seaman on the destroyer USS Robinson.
Upon Bob's return to Boston, he began his career in finance at State Street Bank and Trust, where he met his future wife, Marilyn. After marrying, the couple moved to Albany, NY where Bob took a position with the New York State Department of Civil Service. They raised their family in Voorheesville, a community they called home for over 30 years. After his retirement, Bob and Marilyn returned to New England, settling in Dover. Bob spent his golden years enjoying his grandchildren and taking frequent walks at Hampton Beach. He helped to reestablish the Hampton chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and traveled throughout Europe.
Bob was an avid sports fan, with a particular passion for Boston College athletics. He never missed an Eagles football game, and was able to enjoy many of them in person. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Murphy. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marilyn Murphy (Dechayne), his three children Rob Murphy, Tara (Tim) Guillemin and Maura (Michael) Malark, and four grandchildren Kaila and Ethan Guillemin and Connor and Gavin Malark. He was the beloved brother-in-law of Janet Walsh and the late Jim Walsh, Gail Bernstein and the late Ken Bernstein, and Maryanne Dechayne and the late Gerald Dechayne. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as life-long friends, fellow Eagles John Galvin, Jim McLaughlin and Bob Cullen. The fifth member of the friend group, Jim Wright, preceded Bob in death.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Amedisys Wentworth Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Bob. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Restituto Malonso and his nurse, Elizabeth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations in Bob's memory to Catholic Television of Watertown, MA or The Wounded Warrior Project.
