Robert Joseph Sullivan passed away peacefully in his home in Wellesley Massachusetts on the evening of September 29th, 2024. At 93 years old, "Sully" lived his life to the fullest each day. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 68 years, Constance Rogers Sullivan, his daughter Lynn Anne, his son Daniel Paul and daughter-in-law Sheelah, as well as 7 adored grandchildren, Ryan, Erin, and Shane Nolan, and Joanie, Norah, Maggie and May Sullivan.
Robert Sullivan was born on September 9th, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Eileen O'Hare and John Sullivan. He often regaled his grandchildren with stories of his childhood in the "Hungry Hill" area of Springfield, where every door was open to all neighborhood children. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield, where the twinkle in his eye and wry smile would get him out of any perceived trouble with the nuns. Sully proudly signed up to serve in the United States Navy. Upon getting out of the Navy, he went on to earn his Associates Degree from Oklahoma State. It was back in Springfield that Sully met the love of his life Constance Rogers. As a self-proclaimed talented "jitterbugger" at the local dances, Sully took Connie dancing and the rest is history.
After college, Sully and Connie moved to Bergenfield, New Jersey. They made lifelong friends there, and fully immersed themselves in the Bergenfield community. Whether he was coaching the junior football and baseball teams, Chairing the Recreation Committee, volunteering with the Knights of Columbus or helping to create the first Crimes Stoppers Organization in Bergen County, Sully believed in making a difference in his own way.
In addition to his life in Bergenfield, Sully simply loved the city of New York. With career in insurance spanning over six decades, he knew every building on every corner of the City. Although he "retired" at age 67, in fact he started his own Fire and Liability Protection company. Sullivan Insurance Services thrived until Sully moved to Wellesley at the age of 88.
When his son Daniel was accepted to the United States Military Academy, Sully began another chapter in his colorful life. For the next 25 years, Sully and Connie would invite the West Point Wrestling team and their friends to their tailgate each football weekend. Delicious food, lots of laughter and some much needed relaxation was on the menu. Those years left an impact on numerous cadets lives by providing them with an extended sense of family, especially for those far from home.
Immensely proud of both his children, Lynn and Dan, Sully truly loved spending time with all his grandchildren. Whether Sunday night dinners at the Nolans, dinner with the whole family at Rocco's in NYC, attending every sports event for his grandchildren (and even his "adopted grandchildren"), or taking his granddaughters clothes shopping, his grandchildren adored their grandpa. They loved his sense of humor, his stories, and above all his willingness to "tell it like it is". Over his lifetime, Sully showed his family and friends how to live a life of meaning and doing good for others, but importantly he did it by always staying true to himself and without expecting accolades or anything in return. His life is a testament to the love of family and friends, helping others and being authentic. Sully will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 11AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Rd. Wellesley. Visitation will be held immediately prior to Mass from 9:30-10:30 in the church.
