Obituary

Boston, Massachusetts – Samyoung Kim, age 81, longtime resident of Medford, Massachusetts, and a member of St. Antoine Daveluy Catholic Parish at Corpus Christi of Newton, MA, and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt passed into Eternal Life on June 22, 2023, 9:43 AM at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Mrs. Kim was born in Korea on December 19, 1941, and grew up in Seoul as the sixth of the nine children of Daehyun Cho and Jungtae Kim. She graduated from JinMyung Girls' High School in Seoul, South Korea, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education from Ehwa Women's University, Seoul, Korea.

She married Michael Kyong-il Kim on April 4, 1964, at MyungSooDae Catholic Church, Seoul, Korea, and gave birth to their son, Alexander Dojum Kim. They emigrated to the United States of America in 1968 with the belief that they can make much greater contribution toward betterment of the world. Toward that end, she gave strong spiritual support to her husband, Michael, for his successful advanced study, while giving birth to their second son Andrew Dohyung Kim and daughter Susan Kyunghee Kim, and became naturalized as U.S. Citizen in January 1974. The couple had been married for 59 years when she passed away.

They moved their young family to Berkeley, California in the summer of 1974 for Michael's doctoral study. While he was totally immersed in his research and teaching, she was preparing herself as an accountant at Berkeley Adult School—while supporting her husband's career development and raising the three children by herself—and took a position at the California State Compensation Insurance Fund, a governmental agency of the State of California.

The family moved to Boston in the summer of 1977 when Harvard University offered her husband, Dr. Michael Kyong-il Kim, a professorial position. She also explored her own career opportunities, starting her career as a Faculty Payroll Accountant at Harvard University and managing the entire faculty payroll fund. Mrs. Kim was recognized as a model of professional ethics and office discipline—with her staff and colleagues often referring to her as "Tiger Lady" and the faculty members seeking her consultation. She was truly a remarkable person of strong devotion, sense of responsibility, and professionalism.

Mrs. Kim is survived by her husband, Michael Kyong-il Kim. Ph.D. (Professor Emeritus of the University of Illinois); her son Alexander Dojun Kim and his wife Sunny Ra of Gilbert, Arizona; her daughter Susan Kim Stevens, her husband Paul Stevens, and their children Andrew Tyler Stevens and Ashley Kim Stevens of Winter Garden, Florida; her granddaughter from her late son Andrew Dohyung Kim, Isabelle Taylor (Emily Grace) Kim of Auburn, Washington; her sisters Grace YoungIm Hwang of Orange, CA, Kay KyoungOk Cho of Fort Lee, NJ, Okja Cho and Chayoung Cho of Seoul, Korea with her daughter Namju Moon, M.D., Nammi Moon, Mehee Moon, and her son Kyungkyu Moon; and her sister- in-law, Peggy Cho, wife of late brother Whewon Cho, of Cookeville, TN, with her sons Steven Cho and his wife Amy Cho of Brentwood, TN, Tracey Cho, M.D. and his wife Josalyn Cho, M.D. of North Liberty, IA, and her daughter Tara Cho of Raleigh, NC.

She was preceded in death by her second son, Andrew Dohyung Kim; three brothers, Youngwon Cho,
M.D., Nakwon Cho, Professor Whewon Cho, Ph.D.; a sister Myungok Cho; a brother-in-law, Professor
ByungJib Moon, Ph.D.; and sisters-in-law Jung-il Kim, M.D. and Kyu-il Kim. M.D.

The funeral mass was held on Saturday, June 24, 10:30 AM at St. Antoine Daveluy Church at Corpus
Christi, 45 Ash Street, Auburndale, MA, and a private interment in Knollwood Memorial Park, Garden of
Faith, on Monday, June 26, at 11:00 AM.
