In Loving Memory of Sor Luz Edith Mercedes De Castro Pérez
October 1, 1936 – June 25, 2025

With deep gratitude for a life devoted to God and to others, we share the peaceful passing of Sor Luz Edith Mercedes De Castro Pérez on June 25, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born on October 1, 1936, in Pimentel, Dominican Republic, Sor Luz Edith was the cherished daughter of Felipe De Castro and Rita Emilia Pérez. In 1965, she answered her spiritual calling and entered the Congregación Hermanas de la Caridad del Cardenal Sancha, a Catholic religious order founded in 1869 by Cardinal Ciriaco Sancha y Hervás, dedicated to serving the poor across eleven countries.

Over the decades, Sor Luz Edith carried out her vocation with profound humility, wisdom, and compassion. She ministered in New York, Spain and Dominican Republic where she rose to the role of Chief Economist for her congregation. One of her most enduring legacies is the founding of Casa Madre Amadora, the first and only home in the Dominican Republic dedicated to aging nuns—a sanctuary of dignity, care, and community.

Sor Luz Edith is lovingly remembered by her siblings: Ismael De Castro, Silvia De Castro, and Lourdes De Castro, and by her extended family, religious sisters, and all who were blessed to know her. Her quiet strength, gentle spirit, and lifelong service leave a lasting imprint on the hearts of many.

We rejoice in the belief that she now rests in the eternal embrace of the Lord she served so faithfully.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 30, 2025 at 2PM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Rd. Wellesley followed by interment in Newton Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home immediately prior to the Mass from 12PM - 1:30PM.

Con profundo agradecimiento por una vida consagrada a Dios y al servicio de los demás, anunciamos el fallecimiento en paz de Sor Luz Edith Mercedes De Castro Pérez el 25 de junio de 2025, a los 88 años de edad.

Nacida el 1 de octubre de 1936 en Pimentel, República Dominicana, fue la querida hija de Felipe De Castro y Rita Emilia Pérez. En 1965, respondió al llamado de su vocación religiosa e ingresó a la Congregación Hermanas de la Caridad del Cardenal Sancha, una orden católica fundada en 1869 por el Cardenal Ciriaco Sancha y Hervás, dedicada a servir a los más necesitados en once países.

A lo largo de las décadas, Sor Luz vivió su entrega con profunda humildad, sabiduría y compasión. Sirvió con devoción en Nueva York, España y la República Dominicana, donde llegó a desempeñarse como Ecónoma General de la Congregación. Uno de sus legados más perdurables fue la fundación de La Casa Madre Amadora, el primer y único hogar en la República Dominicana dedicado al cuidado digno de las hermanas
mayores.

Sor Luz es recordada con amor por sus hermanos, Ismael De Castro, Silvia De Castro y Lourdes De Castro, así como por su familia extendida, sus hermanas religiosas y todos aquellos que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerla. Su fortaleza serena, espíritu bondadoso y vida de servicio dejan una huella imborrable en nuestros
corazones.

Nos consuela la fe de que ahora descansa en los brazos eternos del Señor, a quien sirvió con tanto amor y fidelidad.
