Obituary

Terrence John McSweeney was born in Boston and raised in Somerville, Massachusetts. He was the son of Eileen and Thomas McSweeney of Belfast  and Cork, respectively.

Terry entered the world as a surprise. He was the second of two babies born on February 18, 1943. After the delivery of his brother, Tom, the doctor exclaimed, "Oh, there's another baby." Terry had arrived. It was perhaps the only time in his life he was last to arrive. Throughout his life, Terry was perpetually early to everything: the airport, appointments, reservations, work, you name it. Dependability was a quality he carried throughout his life.

Before marrying and starting a family, Terry was a proud member of the United States Army. He was  stationed in Korea and enjoyed sharing stories of his time abroad.

In 1968 he married Joan Doherty. Together they spent the next 57 years building a life filled with love, mutual respect, and happy memories. They began their life together in Winchester, Massachusetts, and shortly thereafter moved to Newton, Massachusetts, where they spent the next 56 years and raised their two children, Michael and Lauren.

He found his greatest happiness in time spent with his family. He considered  his children and grandchildren to be his greatest achievements in life.

Terry had many admirable qualities, but above all else he was dependable, generous, and kind. He was a man of his word and someone who would help at the drop of a hat. His work ethic was second to none.

Terry loved to travel, spend time with his friends, (especially his poker group which met monthly for over 50 years), visits to the Cape and Maine, and to cook (those meatballs!).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eileen and Thomas McSweeney; his twin brother, Tom McSweeney; and his brother, Daniel McSweeney.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan McSweeney of Newton, Massachusetts; his son, Michael McSweeney, and his wife, Lynette, and their children, Michael, Patrick, and Addyson McSweeney of Waltham, Massachusetts; and his daughter, Lauren McSweeney of Waltham, Massachusetts.

His steadiness, generosity, and quiet sense of responsibility left a lasting mark on those who knew him.

The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses, especially Dr. Alireza Vaziri at Boston Medical Center Brighton ( Saint Elizabeth's) for their many years of compassionate  care of Terry.
