Obituary

Thomas H. Adams III, departed this life on January 19 at the age of 84.  He passed quietly and peacefully at his home of 56 years in Wellesley, Massachusetts after a prolonged and courageous battle with throat cancer.  Born on September 25, 1941 to Margaret E. and Thomas H. Adams Jr in Newton, he attended Proctor Academy in NH and later graduated from Ohio State University.  He worked in the first Kevin White administration serving at Boston City Hall and later spent 20 years working in the State Legislature indulging his passion for law and government.

Tom's father was a partner at the former Paine Webber and of course Tom would never think of following in his father's footsteps until one day he realized that not only did he have a talent for financial analysis and developing investment strategies but he found that he actually enjoyed it.  He was good at it and he generously mentored numerous friends who will forever be in his debt.

Tom had a true passion for history, American history, maintaining memberships in the New England Genealogical Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society and the Castine, Maine Historical Society, this last, because that is where his branch of the Adamses hailed from.  Tom was a keen political observer who had the ability to put current events into an historical context that enabled all around him to remain calm and maintain a sense of humor.  He would, on rare occasions, proudly refer to John Adams and John Quincy Adams as two of his favorite uncles.

Above all else, Tom was a kind and generous man and he loved dogs.  For 25 years he and his late wife Virginia bred and showed Great Danes throughout the northeast.  In 1999, in memory of their Great Dane Barkley, who received innovative and compassionate care from the veterinarians at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University they established and endowed the Barkley Fund which advances cardiology and critical care initiatives.

Mr Adams is predeceased by his first wife Virginia Adams who died in 2005,  and his daughter-in-law Dawn Adams who passed away in 2021.   He is survived by his wife of 12 years Nancy E. Marto, and his two children, daughter Cheryl Adams and her son, and son John Adams and his 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

A private burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellesley with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers,  donations in Tom's memory may be made to The Barkley Fund at  the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine https://vet.tufts.edu/
