Usha Jetha Nand Sellers, 89 of Auburndale, MA passed away, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, intellect, and unwavering devotion to her family. Born in Lahore, India, she was one of twins and came of age during a period of profound historical change that shaped her strength, independence, and lifelong curiosity.
Her early years in Lahore were marked by both joy and challenge, as she lived through the upheaval of World War II and the partition of India. She consistently earned academic honors and actively participated in athletics, particularly excelling in the javelin throw, in which she won an All-India bronze medal. These formative experiences instilled in her a quiet courage and adaptability that remained with her throughout her life.
Usha pursued her love of learning with distinction, traveling to the United States to attend Tufts University. There, she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sociology and Anthropology, graduating magna cum laude. She later continued her academic journey at Boston University, where she received her Doctor of Education (EdD). She believed deeply in the transformative power of education and carried that belief into every aspect of her life.
While at Tufts, she met the love of her life, William W. Sellers Jr. Together they built a lasting partnership grounded in love, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to family.
Usha devoted her professional life to education, teaching humanities at Northern Essex Community College, where she later advanced to the role of Dean. Beyond academia, she was a passionate and highly competitive tennis player, earning numerous local tournament titles and fostering a love of sport in her children. In later years, she developed a deep passion for cooking, perfecting authentic Indian cuisine, launching a small sauce business, and offering cooking classes through adult education programs in Boston and Cambridge. Her career came full circle when she returned to Tufts University to establish the Alumni Travel Learn program.
She is survived by her loving children and grandchildren, who brought her immense joy: William Sellers and his wife, Marianne Lee, of Chestnut Hill, MA, and their adult children, Bill and Natalie; Lisa Sellers and her husband, Jim Cuoco, of Concord, MA, and their adult children, Michael, Sam, and Caroline; Allison Blake and her husband, William, of Arlington, VA, and their adult children, Reagan, Billy, and Georgia; and Scott Sellers and his wife, Elizabeth, of Wakefield, MA, and their adult children, Dylan, Noah, and Sydney. She was preceded in death by her late husband, William Sellers.
Usha will be remembered for her strength, grace, and remarkable life journey spanning continents and cultures. She embraced both challenges and opportunities with determination and gratitude, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
A celebration of Usha’s life will be planned for a later date at Lasell Senior Living, Auburndale, MA.
