William Richard Swanson (1942-2025) of Wellesley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend died of lung cancer on June 27, 2025. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family.
Bill was the cherished husband of Ann (Mullin) Swanson for 44 years, loving father to William R. Swanson Jr., Cristine Swanson Burr and son-in-law Matthew Burr, doting Bapa to Madison, Makayla, and Matthew Burr, brother to the late Joanne, brother-in-law to her husband Arthur Helmus and to Ann's five siblings and their spouses, and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Minnesota to the late Elmer and Adeline (Marx) Swanson, Bill grew up in St. Paul, received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, and joined the US Army, serving as a Lieutenant in the Finance Corps. Heading East, he received an MBA from Harvard Business School and JD from Suffolk Law School. Bill was Assistant Treasurer for several years at Pneumo Corporation, an aerospace and retail supermarket conglomerate, and Treasurer of BOSE Corporation for many years until he retired. He was also a member of the board of directors of MutualOne Bank in Framingham, MA.
Bill was a man of faith and long-time member of his parish. He was a valued mentor throughout his business career and helped many he met outside of work. His roles as husband, father and grandfather were paramount to him. He loved Vermont – especially presiding over sledding down the hills around the vacation house he and Ann built in the Northeast Kingdom, mowing the acreage, and building and flying remote-controlled model airplanes from the hilltop. Bill collected and restored classic Corvettes and was an active member of the Bay State Corvette Club. Tending the beautiful garden around their home in Wellesley was a labor of love.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated July 19, 2025, at 11am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Road, Wellesley MA. Reception to follow. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory may be made to Wellesley Food Pantry, 207 Washington St., Wellesley, MA, or to St. John the Evangelist Church.
