Obituary

William Tipton Thrasher of Wellesley Massachusetts, passed on January 28, 2026.

Born in Foreman, Arkansas in 1934, "Bill" was a true original who handcrafted a beautiful life for himself and the many friends he counted as family.  A man of extraordinary broad and comprehensive knowledge, Bill excelled at many things. A talented pianist, he received his BA from Henderson State University, School of Music in Arkadelphia, Arkansas in 1961. He then moved to Boston where he earned his MFA in Theatre Arts from Boston University's School of Fine and Applied Arts.  Bill served briefly as, Professor of Theatre Arts at Endicott College then became Asst. Academic Dean, Instructor in Theatre Arts at Bradford College. In 1969, Bill founded, and for ten years directed, Boston's "Theatre Experiment Laboratory" providing training and practice for new as well as seasoned actors.  It was there that Bill directed a young Fay Dunaway in Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children.

In the second half of his life, Bill's profound interest in all things Japanese led him to travel to Japan on two extended programs of study.  It was there that, with the support of both a Fulbright Scholarship and a Japan Foundation Fellowship, he researched Japans' ancient and profound history of fine art and craft.  Research findings lead to Bill's curation of The Way of Tea, in 1985 and award winning, Kindred Spirits, in 1996, both hosted by the Art Complex Museum, Duxbury MA. Bill established himself as an independent curator and went on to curate, lecture, and support many artists and galleries in Boston and throughout the world. A longtime board member of the Japan Society of Boston, he was honored with their, Thayer Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999. As an adjunct professor, Bill shared his knowledge of Asian fine art and craft at, The Art Institute of Boston, Massachusetts College of Art  and the Rhode Island School of Design as well as numerous institutions of learning throughout the country.

Bill was preceded in death by his cherished partner, Daniel J. Lombardi, Jr.  He is survived by step-brother Ervin McArthur and wife Susan of Garland, Texas, brother-in law Richard Lombardi, sister-in-law Jeannette O'Brien, and cousin Mary Tufts and family.
